Colony Group’s creative department continues to go from strength to strength with the addition of senior creative Simon Buutveld. Simon has long been a top-level creative in Brisbane and now brings his brand savvy and experience to help clients all across the Colony Group network. In this instalment of The Colony Blog, we get to know a little about Simon and what motivates him.
Why did you choose this career path?
I always enjoyed creating. When I was a kid my mates and I would talk about our favourite car or plane. But there was never one I truly liked, well not in the way my friends did. They seemed completely satisfied with their choices, but I wasn’t. I would say “I like that but I’d make the back go down a bit more”, or something to that effect. That passion for creating translated well to advertising and design because you can get a brief, be super into it, and then be done in a reasonably short time frame. Working in film or something that consumes my time on a single concept for over a year would bore me to tears.
What was attractive to you about joining the Colony Group team?
There’s just so much potential here. I’ve worked overseas and different environments are always fruitful territory for me. PNG seems so wild and unknown, and I love that!
What will you be doing in the Brisbane office?
Creating. I came from a design background and then moved into the more traditional advertising world as an Art Director. Now being in the industry for long enough I feel Creative is a more appropriate title. Just coming up with stuff and seeing it manifested in the most appropriate way whether it is design based or not.
What’s your favourite part of your job and career?
The first bit. There’s nothing like a crisp new brief to tackle. Completely untainted by versions or too many opinions, it’s a beautiful thing. You can let your mind race.
What part of your job gets you the most excited?
When people show passion for a project. This subject can be anything. You could be into slugs but if you talk about it with enough enthusiasm, I’m totally onboard!
What do you do outside of work? What are you passionate about?
Back in NZ I was into your normal outdoor stuff, mountain biking, snowboarding, climbing, kayaking, etc. I’m also big on sailing and hope to pursue that more.
Favourite part about living in Brisbane?
Every day is sunny! And if it’s not, it’s only for 10 minutes and those 10 minutes are exciting. Then straight back to sun. It still weirds me out.
What’s your dream job?
My dream job is more an environmental thing than an actual place. It will be when I am working on a super interesting job and I’m surrounded by talented, passionate, vocal people pushing to make something better. That or being a gnarly old fisherman
Tell us something about you that no one would ever guess just by looking at you.
I love tractor pulling!
