Why/how did you choose this career path?
My whole immediate family are weirdo artists with creative career backgrounds, so it’s just always made sense and it’s been a very natural progression – hardly a decision!
What was attractive to you about joining the Colony Group team?
After enjoying a leisurely post-uni gap year or four in retail before kicking off my official career I was left a bit rusty, and so a position as a junior here seemed like a great opportunity to slowly get back into it with the training wheels on. I’ve been here for 3 years now I’ve had plenty of room to grow and flex, building up my skills and confidence.
What do you do in the BNE/Cairns/PM office?
In the Brisbane office I help with a lot of Graphic Design elements, big and small. From billboards to email signatures, and everything in between. I also do plenty of animations, my university major being 2D Animation.
What’s your favourite part of your job and career?
I find most things I do to be a valuable learning experience in one way or another, but animations are my specialty and of course my favourite job. I’m one of the few in the team with the necessary know-how to animate so they make me feel nice and special. Deadlines can often be tight, as is the nature of the beast, and it takes a good mix of creativity, problem solving and ingenuity to get the job done. But who doesn’t like a challenge?
What do you do outside of work? What are you passionate about?
I enjoy a decent handful of creative hobbies, mainly drawing, photoshopping and I’m currently trying to reignite my passion as a photography hobbyist, but I must admit these things often take a back seat to movies and games since having a full-time job. I need to unwind, man! My partner and I are also quite passionate about a refreshing home-made margarita too.
Favourite food, drink, etc? Favourite music/band? Movie?
While I do have a significant weakness for crappy fast food, I’ll throw myself a bone here and say my favourite food is a good seafood noodle soup, much classier. As far as drinks go, I will say not much beats a 7-11 Coke Slurpee on a hot Brisbane day (not sponsored). My music is all over the shop I won’t even start, and I love a good comedy film but I’m a sucker for dystopian/spooky sci-fi.
Favourite part about living in Brisbane/QLD/Australia?
I’ve grown up here in Brisbane so luckily, I don’t know any better, but I do love good old Brisbane. And so much has changed since I was a kid it’s been pretty interesting to observe. Winter could be a little longer and colder though, don’t you think?
What part of your job gets you the most excited?
I like being taught new things, or at least the opportunity to learn something new for myself on the job. I like working in a team – especially with more experienced designers I can learn from and have critique my work. And of course, I love getting a fun looking brief for an animation.
What’s your dream job (besides this one, ha!)? What would be your nightmare job?
The dream job is no job at all, of course – passive income baby! That reminds me, I really should invent a billion-dollar product soon…
I have a legitimate answer for ‘nightmare job?’, and that is KFC. I worked there for like 4 years as a teenager and I always have freaky dreams where I offer to cover someone’s shift almost a decade after having worked there. Crikey!
Tell us something about you that no one would ever guess just by looking at you.
I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet
A pawn and a king
I’ve been up and down and over and out
And I know one thing
Each time I find myself
Flat on my face
I pick myself up and get
Back in the race
